there's this anthology of Spider-Man stories called 'The Ultimate Spider-Man,' edited by Stan Lee. i picked it up a few years back and was reading it, and there's a story in it called "Five Minutes," in which a man commits suicide because Mary Jane asks Peter to stay in bed with her for 5 more minutes, so Spider-Man gets to the scene too late to talk him down.
originally, this piece was inspired by that story. it was going to be Peter jumping out the window, pulling on his costume, while MJ stood behind him in her underwear, angrily watching him go. but then i got done with Peter--which took FOREVER, Tobey Maguire is a bitch to draw!-- and it just didn't seem right. i was afraid for one that if i tried to put another figure in this painting, it wouldn't be of the same quality as Peter. so this is what i did instead, and i think it works just as well. and it's the same idea.
now, i'm sure somebody out there is going to think this is lame because it's Spider-Man "movie" fanart rather than Spider-Man "comic book" fanart, but i have to say. when i was little i watched the early 90's Spider-Man cartoon series that was on tv, and i loved that. when i saw the movie, it totally MADE Spider-Man for me. i'm too young to have really read the comics, so my perception is mainly from the cartoon and the movies. Tobey Maguire is the best Peter Parker i could ever imagine. when i think of Peter, he has Tobey's face. in the movies, all of the characters were imbued with such emotion and such desperation that it really called to me.
anyway, every time i watch the movies, my heart breaks for the characters. i'm not a huge Spider-Man fan, but i wanted to do some art as a tribute to the characters. here it is. i spent a huge amount of time on this, and i hope everybody out there enjoys it.

love the fabric.. love the skin tones.. that is definitely tobey's mandible.
i heart the perspective most, and the area below the figure in the background, the shadow, most.
